European Commission approves the continuation of Hungarian Film Support Schemes until December 2019

The European Commission approved with its resolution as of 16 July 2008 the Hungarian film support schemes until 31 December 2013. Under this scheme a tax payer who provides support for film production which complies with certain conditions is entitled to a tax incentive. The maximum amount of support is 20% of the Hungarian expenditure of the film production budget when the Hungarian production costs are 80% or more of the total production budget. On 9 July 2013 Hungary notified the Commission on the prolongation of this scheme.

On 12 September 2013 the European Commission  prolonged the existing scheme by additional 6 years, i.e. until 31 December 2019. The prolonged scheme exists with the same conditions as the original scheme with the following minor changes:

  • the Hungarian Motion Picture Fund (who distributed the grants) is replaced by National Film Fund
  • corporate film sponsors may provide support through the National Film Fund (beside support directly to a specific film production)
  • the Hungarian authorities intend to precise the eligible costs relating to aid for film production
